1. Management and Its Functions

Management means getting work done through people to achieve organisational goals efficiently and effectively. Effectiveness means completing the intended task or achieving the goal, while efficiency means completing it with minimum waste of time, money, and resources.

Management involves five major functions:

  • Planning: Deciding what needs to be done and how to do it.
  • Organising: Arranging resources and assigning responsibilities.
  • Staffing: Hiring and developing suitable employees.
  • Directing: Guiding, motivating, and supervising employees.
  • Controlling: Checking performance and correcting deviations from planned targets.

For example, when a company launches a new product, it must plan its strategy, organise its team, hire employees if needed, guide their work, and monitor results.

2. Principles of Management

Principles of management are general guidelines that help managers make decisions and manage organisations effectively. Two important contributors to this area are Henri Fayol and F. W. Taylor.

Fayol focused on general principles of management, such as division of work, unity of command, and discipline. Taylor developed scientific management, which emphasises improving efficiency through scientific methods of studying and organising work.

For example, unity of command means an employee should receive orders from only one superior. This helps avoid confusion and conflicting instructions.

3. Planning and Organising

Planning involves deciding in advance what an organisation wants to achieve and how it will achieve it. It provides direction and helps managers prepare for possible challenges. However, planning cannot eliminate uncertainty because business conditions may change unexpectedly.

Organising comes after planning and involves identifying activities, grouping tasks, assigning duties, and establishing reporting relationships.

For instance, if a company plans to expand its sales, it may create separate marketing and sales teams, assign responsibilities, and establish who reports to whom. Understanding the difference between planning and organising is useful for answering comparison-based questions.

4. Financial Management

Financial management deals with decisions about obtaining and using money within an organisation. Its main objective is to maximise shareholders’ wealth by making appropriate financial decisions.

Three important financial decisions are:

  • Investment decision: Deciding where the business should invest its funds.
  • Financing decision: Deciding how to raise the required funds, such as through debt or equity.
  • Dividend decision: Deciding how much profit should be distributed to shareholders and how much should be retained in the business.

For example, a company planning to open a new factory must decide how much money to invest and whether to finance the project through loans, shareholders’ funds, or a combination of both.

5. Marketing Mix: The Four Ps

The marketing mix refers to the combination of strategies a business uses to market its products effectively. It consists of four elements:

  • Product: What the business offers to customers.
  • Price: How much customers must pay.
  • Place: How the product reaches customers.
  • Promotion: How the business informs customers about the product and encourages purchases.

For example, a company launching a new skincare product must decide its formulation and packaging, set a suitable price, choose where to sell it, and promote it through advertising or social media.

Business Studies Class 12 Board Exam Preparation Tips

Start by studying the prescribed NCERT textbook and understanding the meaning of each concept before memorising its features or importance. Pay attention to textbook keywords because they help you write precise, relevant answers.

Practise case-study questions regularly. Read each situation carefully, identify the clues, and connect them to the appropriate concept or principle. Also, revise differences between similar terms, such as recruitment and selection, or delegation and decentralisation. When writing answers, use clear headings and explain each point briefly.

Avoid memorising entire paragraphs without understanding them. Do not confuse similar concepts or write lengthy answers that miss the main point. Regular revision and application-based practice can help you identify and correct these weaknesses.

Regular revision and effective exam preparation strategies can help students improve their understanding and answer questions more confidently.
