However, remote and hybrid consulting models are essentially the new standard. The pandemic has prompted many companies to transition to a remote work environment. As we are slowly moving to a post-pandemic era, these types of work are no longer considered temporary solutions but rather ways that are changing the consulting industry itself.
Consultants no longer need to visit clients physically as they can establish relationships with clients in a relaxed manner, be it at their homes or at any other flexible work locations. They can efficiently handle projects and, at the same time, keep a work-life balance, which is ideal for them. The concept of hybrid consulting is not just a temporary phenomenon but is rather a trend of the future and hence businesses need to adjust to these changes if they want to remain competitive.
Understanding the Remote & Hybrid Consulting Landscape
It is important prior to discussing the… to clarify what remote and hybrid consulting mean.
Remote Consulting:
Consultants do not go into the office and work and meet in a separate location. Instead, they work with clients over things such as video calls and emails, set meetings with internal teams as needed, and manage their projects in an entirely digital way.
Hybrid Consulting:
This is a work arrangement that contains parts of both remote and traditional office work. Consultants can work where they want for a couple of days a week, but go to meet clients in person or go into the office for meetings if needed.
Both of these strategies have benefits on their own; however, there are challenges that come with each that need to be addressed for the business to run efficiently.
First of all, frontier managers should be given the power and resources to assist employees in adapting to the new situation of working from home. In the past, the division or team meetings, as well as the personal coaching sessions, have been the usual instruments of frontier managers. It is the way they understand and motivate their employees, check real-time engagement, give employees strategic context, and explain the meaning. Though some leaders may easily switch to virtual meetings, others will need some training and new daily activities to develop their online communication, coaching, engagement, and management skills with remote or hybrid teams.
It used to be that companies would prepare their leaders for the challenging situations through the development of skills like emotional intelligence and community building within teams. These skills have become even more vital, especially for colleagues who have joined the team during the pandemic.
Examples of the hybrid work model:
Fixed/Specific Onsite Days
In a fixed hybrid work model, the organisation establishes a standard that applies to everyone. For example, every Monday and Tuesday, everyone comes into the office; on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, employees can work from home; or on the first day of the month, everyone comes into the office, and any remaining days staff can work from anywhere.
Asynchronous Work Context
An asynchronous working situation is defined by the lack of a requirement to conduct work tasks on a specific day or time, so often the communication will be out of sync (for example, there is an expectation that if you send someone an email, it could take time for a response to appear). Each employee can decide to work at their convenience. This type of approach helps allow people from vastly different time zones to work collaboratively on the team.
Shifts Arrangements
Shift systems are yet another hybrid work schedule. Workers will know the days they must be at work and the time they will start and finish work. After that, the schedule can be adjusted as necessary so that there are always sufficient people available to work “on” schedules and be off during the day or night. This shift pattern can also be used in other time zones for the customer service or tech support division of software.
Standard Office Hour
Standard office hours are a conventional work hours structure which acts as a benchmark whereby employees have a certain number of hours in a day allocated to meetings, collaborative work, responding to email and the like, regardless of whether they are working in the office or not.
For example, office hours may be from 10 am – 3 pm, and the employees can choose the time at which they complete their other hours. If an employee is expected to do 8 hours a day, they can complete them from 7 am to 3 pm. Alternatively, if the employee wants to work from 10 am – 3 pm and then finish their work time with a break in between for dinner, they can simply work later in the evening from 6 pm – 9 pm.
Remote-First
A remote-first approach to work is what a multitude of companies mostly decided to adopt after the pandemic. In such a hybrid work schedule, the employees have no obligation to come to the office but they may do so if they wish.
One Week/Month in the Office
The one-week in the office model is a poorly utilised hybrid work schedule. The employees are given the freedom to work from any location, even from the office, for three weeks in a month, and during the last week, the whole team meets at the office for team meetings, in-person learning and development, and socialising.
Conclusion
Hybrid models are not going anywhere. In 2025, companies will have to adjust to the changing consulting environment by using these models. Technology, trust, and clarity of expectations between consultants and clients will be the main factors of success. Consulting firms can be successful in a world where going to the office is not compulsory if they have the appropriate strategies. Be flexible, keep in touch, and make sure that your team is equipped for the remote and hybrid consulting world.
