The Great Resignation Meets Gen Z: Why Fresh Graduates Are Rejecting Traditional Careers
1. Opening.
Gen Z employment trends are rapidly changing the modern job market. Fresh graduates now prefer flexibility, purpose, and balance over traditional long-term careers, creating a new career rejection pattern worldwide.
In recent past years the world of work has transformed greatly. We saw The Great Resignation which reported how millions left their jobs out of discontent or to go after better options (1).
Also at the same time Gen Z is coming into the workforce. This new generation is not into the same career tracks as the older generations. What we are seeing instead is the emergence of Gen Z employment trends which are centered around happiness, flexibility, and purpose instead of just money or job security (2).
2. A Different Approach to Jobs.
In the past it was thought that to do well in your career you had to get a good job, work at it for many years and see your way up the promotion ladder. But not so for Gen Z. Many of today’s young graduates do not buy into that at all.
What we see is that many want out of the traditional 9 to 5, they are not interested in spending 30 years with the same company, in fact that is what they find boring and stressful (3). Instead what they are looking for in a job is something that will give them growth, which will present them with new challenges and the chance to try out different roles.
This shift in thinking is what is driving the new Gen Z employment trends which see young people going for short term contracts, freelance work, or starting their own businesses (4).
3. Impact of the Great Resignation.
The Great Resignment also played a large role in the way in which Gen Z approaches work. We saw that older employees were leaving due to issues like stress, low salary, and poor work life balance that in turn made Gen Z think twice about their own career choices (1).
Thus many recent graduates are turning down roles which require long hours or which don’t value personal time. What we are also seeing is a trend of career rejection young people are saying no to companies which don’t live up to what they want from a job (5).
Rather then just take what is put out to them, they are being very picky about which companies and roles they put their name to.
4. Role of Mental Health and Work-Life Balance.
Gen Z reports very different values when compared to past generations in terms of mental health. Today’s youth are very open about their stress, anxiety, and burnout (6). They do not trade health for a higher salary. Also many graduates are saying no to the9to5 grind which is rigid and tiresome.
Instead they are into flexible work options like remote and part time work. This is also a element of the shift in Gen Z’s job trends which see life balance as a greater priority than professional growth (2).
5. Technology’s role in our time.
Technology also plays a large role in what Gen Z chooses as careers. Via the Internet, young people able to learn new skills, earn online, and also connect with people worldwide (7). We see that platforms like YouTube, freelancing sites, and social media which in turn create a host of new career options.
Also we are seeing more of a trend of fresh graduates going into creative or digital fields rather than traditional office roles (4). They are more independent in which paths they choose to go into.
6. End result.
In the end we see that the Great Resignation along with the entry of Gen Z into the job market has brought about great change.
What we are to see is that grads are not at all going into traditional career tracks as they used to. Instead they are making informed decisions based on what they need, what they value, and what they see for their future.
We are seeing the rise of Gen Z in the work force and also which careers they are rejecting which shows that this generation is looking for more than just a job they are after meaningful and balanced lives (2). This shift is a challenge for companies but also an opportunity to create better work environments for the future.
