Over the last several years, inflation has been evident in many different forms. You likely see the effects of inflation at the grocery store, gas station, or when shopping online.
Put simply, rising prices is defined as an increase in price across all product types, and financial planning continues to happen; as prices increase, so do changes in the ways that customers spend, save, and make decisions; these things are some of the indirect ways that financial planning affects customer behavior.
An example of one of the most direct ways that rising prices affects consumer behaviour is through how much people actually spend when they go out to buy things.
With increasing prices, consumers start being more conservative in their purchases and thus prioritize basic needs like food, rent, and utilities, and reduce spending on “extras” such as dining out, going to a movie, or luxury goods.
Even the small decisions, such as choosing to buy a less expensive brand of a product or not making an additional purchase, are becoming everyday occurrences.
The value-for-money proposition is becoming more important as consumers have started to look at purchasing patterns differently. Consumers tend to compare prices and look for discounts before making a buying decision, and they often will wait for items to go on sale before they buy.
Many consumers choose to purchase a lower-cost item or use the bulk-buy option to save money over the long haul as well. The shift in consumer buying behaviour is especially noticeable in the retail sector, resulting in retailers changing their pricing strategies to match the buying preferences of their customers.
Inflation has affected many consumers’ shopping behaviour, changing how frequently they go grocery shopping due to planning and budgeting their money and tracking their expenses before purchasing something.
This shift in purchasing habits indicates a more conscious financial awareness of being in control of their finances, which tends to increase with higher rates of rising prices.
Inflation affects savings and investments as well. As the cost of living increases, individuals will want to save more money in case of emergencies or to build up their net worth through investments, which would help protect them from rising prices.
Those living on fixed incomes do not have the means to save without difficulty and therefore experience more financial difficulty than those who do have the ability to save.
Another major change in consumer behaviour is with brand loyalty. In stable times, consumers often choose to remain with known brands that they trust. When rising prices rises, and they are faced with higher rates for the same products as in previous times, consumers will begin to seek alternatives to the products they have relied on in the past. This is not always a favorable development for businesses.
People’s emotional response to market conditions can also be affected. The financial strain created by market conditions can result in stress and anxiety, which ultimately leads to individuals making poor decisions based on these feelings.
Some individuals become overly cautious and conservative with their money, while others may succumb to “panic buying” (i.e., buying large quantities of items) because they fear that prices will rise even more.
Overall, market conditions impacts consumers’ perceptions of prices; i.e., how they view and respond to prices. Generally, consumers with higher levels of financial literacy tend to practice better judgment when managing their finances or spending money than do less financially literate consumers.
However, while rising prices creates challenges for all consumers and businesses, individuals and business entities that are mindful of their spending habits and shopping behaviors will likely be able to adjust to the unsteady economy much more successfully than those individuals who are not.
